Internet of Coins Update #31: A new year dawns

06 Jan 2018 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. This newsletter will be sent out once every two weeks, to keep our supporters updated about our development efforts.

Awards time!

The year has just started, and the Internet of Coins project has been nominated for a 2018 Internet Innovation Award by the Dutch chapter of the Internet Society. We are honored by their mention, and strive to continue to live up to the expectations. If you can read Dutch, you can find out more about the nomination and the other projects here.

KISS, KISS, KISS

We added some documentation and a startup script on our github to make it easier for tech savvy enthusiasts to get up and running with the hybridd node system. It automatically pulls in all direct runtime dependencies like nodejs and regenerates the views before starting. For other dependencies, we added some simple instructions that should allow our supporters to get started with less hassle. Keep in mind the software is still in alpha state, so do not store large amounts of value on it at the moment, until the stack matures.

Fundamental cryptography: 'all our bits are belong to us'

This week, members of our team have been busy further strengthening the cryptographical routines used to secure communications between hybridd node and its clients. We reviewed the latest insights to come out of the 34th Chaos Communications Congress in Leipzig, Germany recently and are in the process of reviewing the current scientific literature and best practices, to make sure 'all our bits are belong to us' (see http://ccc.wf/allyourbase) and that this will remain so in the foreseeable future. In other words, we are working hard to make sure your information remains safely encrypted and cannot be read by any eavesdroppers or third parties, since we are firmly commited to the privacy of our user base.

Put another star on it

The wallet now supports the option to favorite assets by giving them a 'star' in the Assets overview. Their current state will then show up on the main dashboard immediately after login. This will save you an extra click and makes the dashboard more user friendly :)

Internet of Coins Update #30: December cheer issue

16 Dec 2017 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. This newsletter will be sent out once every two weeks, to keep our supporters updated about our development efforts.

Making it easier

Our last wallet release had support for a large variety of tokens. This number has since increased, and support for new cryptocurrencies is now an ongoing process. Next to that we have two new features that will make asset and token management a bit easier.

Put a star on it

The wallet now supports the option to give a star to your favourite cryptocurrencies so they will appear on your dashboard. This way you can keep track of these assets outside of the asset view. Selecting a few cryptocurrencies to display on the dashboard, instead of all of them, loads the dashboard faster and gives a more responsive feel.

Decentralized storage: phase one

User settings - like for example which cryptocurrencies are shown on the dashboard - are now stored in a decentralized way, and synchronized between your browser and network node. This means the first phase of our decentralized storage system is now working. On the road ahead we will be developing our consensus mechanism to share this encrypted data end-to-end directly between nodes. The goal is to make a state machine that safely stores user data, without needing to use a blockchain.

The Christmas holidays

The coming two weeks several members of our team will be on Christmas holiday. This means it may take a bit longer for your questions to be answered by e-mail or on the chat channels. We hope you also will have the possibility to take some time out to spend with friends and/or family for holidays and new year reflections. Starting January we will be back in full force to continue on our roadmap for 2018.

Internet of Coins Update #29: November novelties

28 Nov 2017 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. Asset management

The last alpha released focused on enabling the use of the Ethereum XHY token. Testing showed there were no bugs, so now we have gone full steam ahead to implement asset management. Next to that we have added support for the NXT blockchain. Wallet users can now add any Ethereum or NXT token. We have had help from the community to add all the needed recipes to support these tokens. Please take care not to store large amounts of value at this time.

User interface freshness

Our UX/UI designer has improved the design and usability of the wallet. The interface is now more responsive, and numbers are represented in a way that is more palatable to the eyes. Small screen support has also been improved.

Command line power

With this newsletter we also proudly announce the first release of our command line wallet for Internet of Coins. This wallet is most interesting for technical people who like to work with the command line on Linux. It sports all the same functionality as the web UI. If you like the console, go and check it out! You can find it here: https://github.com/internetofcoins/cli4ioc

Internet of Coins Update #28: Workin' on the railroad

30 Oct 2017 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. Just add steam and coal

In the past weeks we have been busy implementing further Ethereum smart contract support, the next logical step after creating support for our XHY token in line with the ERC20 standard on the Ethereum blockchain. Our user interface presentation code was split from our functional code and our stylesheets are being reworked. Besides this work on our 'main engine' we have been busy implementing an innovative system to exchange privacy sensitive data securely, in a decentralised way. The individual parts of this system are well-tested internet protocols like RSA encoding, onion routing and Bittorrent protocols, but the way we want to harness them together allowing for decentralised operations is unique to our project.

New alpha: Teeny Tiny Token

We have just finished the next alpha wallet and it is ready for testing. For this version we focused on making it work faster, more user friendly and added the XHY hybrid asset token for testing the ERC20 token support. As it is part of the Ethereum ecosystem you can see that the token is called ETH.XHY in our wallet. We'd like you to try out this version. Let us know if something is not working as it should, or tell us if you have ideas to make things better. The next alpha will support many more tokens and a way to manage them, while for now this one lists XHY for starters. You can find public alpha version 0.22 "teeny tiny token" available at: https://wallet.coinstorm.net

Internet of Coins Update #27: The river runs to the delta

07 Oct 2017 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. This newsletter will be sent out roughly every fortnight, to keep our supporters updated about our development efforts.

Hybrid listed on EtherDelta

Together with the early holders we did a token upgrade over the past two weeks. To adhere to the latest ERC20 standards set out by the Ethereum foundation, we upgraded the token and arranged for it to be listed on EtherDelta. You can now find the token on the decentralized exchange there under the symbol name XHY in the dropdown list. Currently the volume is still low, and we expect this will remain for a while, until we reach the point where we can create a unified market between the hybrid chains.

Ethereum Classic

After testing the Ethereum module with success, we now have also added support for Ethereum Classic. We are adding more cryptocurrencies, and will be working on the implementation of token handling. With the support of tokens, we will take another important step towards supporting hybrid assets in the wallet.

Less is more

We have developed a forage cache mechanism in the browser that makes the Internet of Coins wallet more bandwidth efficient after the first login. Libraries used for transactions now no longer need to be pulled in on every login. Instead they are cached to make logging into the wallet much faster.

Usability

Luca is putting effort into making the user interface more user friendly. She is first focusing on making the CSS style sheets clean and tidy. After that she will be strictly separating any user interface code from functional code to make sure these cannot cause confusion for other developers.

Legal efforts

The past weeks we have made progress in formalising our organisational structure. A draft of the statutes for the custodian foundation under the Commons Conservancy, that will safeguard the open source technologies developed by the Internet of Coins project, is now undergoing scrutiny by legal experts. We have also found three people willing to chair the Internet of Coins foundation, who will hold the Internet of Coins team accountable as to how assets are allocated to further project goals according to our crowdfund terms.

We are hiring

Last week we had several meet and greets with talented programmers to help us out in implementing key aspects of the hybridd infrastructure. All of them have experience in nodejs and high availability javascript coding. Various specialists on the crossroads of mathematics and information theory were among them. Each of them will receive a special challenge to give them the chance to prove their mettle and show off what they will bring to the team.

Internet of Coins Update #26: I heard it through the grapevine

12 Sep 2017 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. This newsletter will be sent out once every two weeks, to keep our supporters updated about our development efforts.

Grapevine talk

On our chat channels there was some confusion over a message that did not come from us, and instructed people to make a wallet. Be sure only to respond to instructions that come from Internet of Coins directly. As per our terms (https://coinstorm.net/terms) we will release a public wallet to receive the tokens in the first quarter of 2018. See 'The release of the tokens' below for details. If you have any suspicions about emails claiming to be from Internet of Coins, or using the IoC name, please forward the contents to info@internetofcoins.org so we can take appropriate measures. Internet of Coins is an independent initiative and has NOT instructed any other organisation to speak on our behalf.

Alpha wallet updated

Our ALPHA wallet (only for testing purposes) was updated and now integrates many improvements. We invite people to try it out and give us feedback per email about their experience. Please keep in mind this is experimental code, so please do not store large amounts of value until the testing phase has been completed. The alpha wallet can now be reached at https://wallet.coinstorm.net We'd love to hear some feedback on your experience with the wallet.

Tell me more, tell me more...

We now have a working implementation of deterministic Ethereum functions, so the ETH blockchain can be connected to our ecosystem. We have integrated the REST API into the command line wallet for testing purposes. Processes in the code have been segregated, or split up into separate streams, for more security. Account credentials are checked at login using a validation algorithm to prevent typing mistakes. Also our connectors to other RPC (remote procedure call) interfaces have been improved.

'How we roll'

We noticed some questions about the token release cycle in our email inbox. Some supporters asked how and when they would receive their tokens. For most people, the tokens will be released in the first quarter of 2018, when our integrated and user-friendly wallet has been developed. The last requests for early holders are now being handled.

The release of the tokens

There have been questions regarding where the HYBRID tokens are 'visible' and how donators can know where their tokens are stored. We build on earlier achievements, and hence the infrastructure to carry our tokens will be developed using the (crypto)currency that our supporters donate. At the present moment, this means your registration information is your ticket for our Fundraiser. Make sure to keep a copy of the TXID of your donation, screenshots of transactions and confirmation, your PIN and/or the confirmation email. The deadline for those without any confirmation of their donation to contact us was September 1st.

Once the network infrastructure is functional, each donator will be able to create their own account on the newly developed system. This account will receive the amount of HYBRID tokens reserved according to the USD value of the donation at the time of participating, as per our terms. In the course of development, the network will be connected to different coins and token systems, also those included in the fundraiser.

Internet of Coins Update #25: Enabling progress for our developers

21 Aug 2017 / CodaSiren

Dear cryptocurrency enthusiast,

We thank you for your interest in our project, and all who participated in our crowdfund. You are receiving this e-mail because you have either signed up for the Internet of Coins e-mail updates, participated in the crowdfund or have previously been in touch with one of our team members. From August onward, this newsletter will be sent out once every two weeks, to keep our supporters updated about our development efforts.

Developments underway

To enable more efficient development of deterministic crypto-functions we are developing a command-line client. This is also vital for those people who need to access blockchain technologies in places with extremely low bandwidth, as the communication between the command-line client and hybrid nodes is much less resource consuming than the web interface (which is already the most efficient in its class). Others in our team have been working on the transport mechanisms, so that both command-line and web clients can exchange information decentralised with nodes and these can share datagrams amongst themselves in a secure and tamper-proof manner, without having to depend on untrusted or centralised third parties, such as certification authorities.

Token status

A third party that had initially shown initiative to launch the hybrid tokens used within the Internet of Coins on a centralised exchange has stopped communicating with us. We assume for now that their technicians will need more time than they anticipated and hope they will contact us again when they make progress. On the bright side, we observe that the tokens of individual chains are becoming available on the decentralized exchanges. Of course, we will inform you when markets establish themselves. In the meantime, we focus on implementing the infrastructure and network support for decentralised multiple-token interchange.
